Smithson Valley Relay Breaks 20-year 6A State Record

The Smithson Valley boys swim team set a state record time for the 200-yard medley relay at the UIL 6A State Swimming and Diving competition Saturday, Feb. 16, breaking a 20-year state record and finishing fifth place in the tournament overall.

The medley relay made up of Joe Hunt, a junior; Carter Hill, a sophomore; Konnar Klinksiek, a senior; and Amechi Nwaeze, a junior, swam the 200 yards in 1:30.73 to break the state record.

Also winning gold was the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Shaun Besch, a senior; Hunt, Nwaeze and Klinksiek with a time of 1:23.26, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Nwaeze, Hill, Chris Mickelson, a junior, and Hunt, came in 12th place.

Individual awards were earned by Klinksiek, who won a silver medal in the 100-yard butterfly and a bronze in the 50-yard freestyle, Hunt, who took silver medal in the 100-yard backstroke, and Nwaeze, who came in 10th place for the 100-yard freestyle.
