Rookie Teacher Spotlight: Kaitlyn Bond

Bond came on board at the start of the spring semester just after graduating from Texas State University last December. Having earned a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science, she joined the PRMS PE/Athletics department.

Although she hasn't been here long, Bond feels as if this is her calling. When she was in 3rd grade, she wrote that she was going to become a coach just like her dad. She added, “Even when I was doing my student teaching, it just all felt so natural. This is where I plan to stay.”

Here’s what Coach Bond had to say about how her first semester has been so far.

How has your first semester of coaching been?

Honestly, it has been greater than I could have ever imagined. I am surrounded by great coaches every day and that has everything to do with it. This is a great middle school and the kids were so welcoming and understanding of me coming in midyear. I really do feel super lucky to be here.

What are some important things you have learned during your first semester of coaching?

It is all about the relationship you have with the students. From something as simple as knowing their name, to figuring out how to read them and reach out to those who might not be as motivated. It is important to learn your students so you can reach out to them on an individual level. I’ve especially learned how to be more flexible and be prepared to change plans at a moment’s notice. Also, I’ve realized how important it is to get to know your coworkers and to not be scared to ask questions.

What are your favorite things about working at PRMS?

The staff is one of the most welcoming groups of people I’ve met! The kids are great, the location is great. Most importantly, the competitive spirit and pride within both the students and staff is so special.

Walking into the 4th period girls’ PE class, you would expect them to be tired and sluggish, especially since they just got back from lunch. However, on this day Bond was trying something new with them to see if it could be something fun to add to the routine. They were doing various workouts set to music, and although the students were clearly working up a sweat, many of them were still smiling and moving to the beat.

Naomi Trest, 8th grade, said, “ Coach Bond is really fun to be around. She likes to try new things and makes PE as fun as possible. As long as you do what you’re supposed to do, it’s all fun.” Another 8th grader, Madison Fisher, agreed. “She’s a nice, kind, and caring person. She makes this PE class fun.”

Coach Bond echoes the sentiment that she feels lucky to work here at Pieper Ranch and we feel equally as lucky to have her on our team. We know she will continue to contribute to the proud, competitive spirit of our school for a long time to come.
