Dec. 17, 2021 - The Comal ISD Board of Trustees recognized the Canyon High School state qualifying volleyball team, two Canyon Lake High School SkillsUSA Texas honorees and a CHS Agriculture Issues Forum Team during its regular meeting Tuesday, Dec. 14.
The CHS Volleyball team made school history this season with a record of 40 wins in a single season. The Cougarettes ended the year third in the state and the Texas 5A Region 4 Champions. This was the school’s 12th appearance in the state tournament.
The CHS Volleyball team was led by head coach Heather Sanders who was named All-Star Coach; assistant coaches Kelsey Ahrens, Danielle Sanchou and Rob Rush; along with athletic trainer Tara Farr.
The team included the following student athletes: Kimi Bukowski, Kloey Cato, Danielle Classy, Mindy Conger, Victoria Fontenot, Megan Hawkins, Trista Henson, Ainsley Jones, Maya Jones, Alyssa Koehl, Caiden Lasala, Kyla Malone, Angi Peralez, Courtney Pope, Haylee Ranft, Haley Therien, Morgan Unsworth, Ariana Villanueva, McKenzie Woitena and Isabell Woo.
Fontenot, Hawkins and Malone received All-State Honors. Malone also made the All-Legacy Team, and Pope was invited to play in the All-Star game in July.
Another CHS team was recognized for qualifying for state competition. The Agriculture Issues Forum Team competed in the Texas FFA State Leadership Development Event Finals in early December and placed 10th out of 120 teams from across the state.
Team members include Amanda Drew, Braydon Durst, Addison Holt, Carlie Kelso, Tyler Miner, Brooklyn Wiley and Peyton Wirebaugh. They were coached by Kaylee Musgrove.
In addition to state qualifiers, two students from Canyon Lake High School were recognized for their success in SkillsUSA Texas. As District 10 officers, Jade Paz and Lilah Windle were eligible to attend the SkillsUSA Texas Summer Leadership Conference and received the highest honor in SkillsUSA Texas – the Texas Statesman Award. Their adviser and teacher, Michael Tokarski, also received this award.
SkillsUSA is a nonprofit national education association that helps middle, high school and college/postsecondary students prepare for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations.
